Elon Musk's Platform X Faces Scrutiny Over Using User Data for AI Chatbot Training
Jul 27, 2024
Elon Musk's social media platform X is under scrutiny by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) after reports emerged that the platform's default settings allowed user data to be used for training Musk's AI chatbot, Grok. This change, which was not initially communicated to users, enables X to utilise posts, interactions, inputs, and results for training and fine-tuning Grok without explicit user consent. The DPC has been in discussions with X for several months and expressed surprise at the recent developments, indicating that further engagement with X is expected soon. Users have been advised to disable this setting by navigating to "Settings > Privacy and safety > Data sharing and personalization > Grok".Despite the controversy, Musk has received positive feedback on his decision to make Grok open source, with users applauding the move and contrasting it with OpenAI's practices.
