Yamakoshi village in Japan has launched the Neo-Yamakoshi Village project, leveraging NFTs named Nishikigoi to support its aging population. The initiative has attracted 1,700 "digital citizens" through the sale of these NFTs, serving both as identifiers and governance tokens for community participation in DAO-managed processes. Since its inception in 2021, the project has raised over $423,000 from NFT sales, funding local initiatives such as sports events for school children. Despite challenges in explaining the technology to older adults and language barriers for overseas participants, the project marks an innovative attempt to address rural community sustainability amidst Japan's declining birth rates.
