US Energy Officials Agree to Halt Crypto Mining Survey and Destroy Data
Mar 4, 2024
Following a legal battle between United States energy officials and representatives from the Texas Blockchain Council (TBC) and Bitcoin mining firm Riot Platforms, an agreement has been reached to halt a proposed emergency survey targeting crypto miners nationwide. As per a recent filing, the U.S. Department of Energy, along with the Energy Information Administration (EIA) and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), have resolved to discontinue the collection of data from crypto miners under the "EIA-862 Emergency Collection Request." The agreement includes the deletion of all previously gathered information deemed intrusive by the TBC and Riot, with any forthcoming data also slated for disposal. This settlement effectively terminates a temporary restraining order, initially set to expire on March 8, and underscores the contentious nature of government oversight in the crypto mining sector.
