Taiwan's central bank, led by President Yang Chin-long, has emphasised a cautious and methodical approach towards the development of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). Yang stated that the central bank is prioritising steady progress over speed, as seen from the outcomes of other countries that have launched or tested CBDCs without significant success. Currently, the bank is focusing on improving domestic payment efficiency and innovation through ongoing experiments in three scenarios: retail CBDC, wholesale CBDC, and the application of tokenization technology. Although there is no specific timetable for the CBDC launch, Taiwan's central bank is dedicated to enhancing the payment system's processing efficiency and exploring innovative applications, ensuring that any future implementation aligns with public needs and government policies.
