Aug 16, 2024
San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu has filed a groundbreaking lawsuit against the owners of 16 websites that use AI to create non consensual nude images of women and girls. The sites allow users to upload images of clothed individuals, which are then altered using AI to produce realistic pornographic images. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, targets individuals and companies based in the U.S., UK, and Estonia, alleging violations of both state and federal laws, including those against deepfake pornography, revenge porn, and child sexual abuse material.Chiu emphasised that while AI technology holds promise, its misuse for exploitation is a serious issue. His office reported that these websites have been visited 200 million times in just the first half of 2024. The lawsuit seeks to shut down these websites, prevent further illegal activities, and hold the site operators accountable. The issue has sparked concerns globally, with similar incidents reported in schools and social media platforms. The case highlights the growing need to address the misuse of AI for generating harmful content and reinforces the call for stricter regulations and safeguards.
