Neuralink’s Second Human Trial: Musk Promises 'Superhuman Abilities' as Brain Implant Shows Success
Aug 4, 2024
Elon Musk's brain-computer interface startup, Neuralink, has begun its second human trial, as Musk revealed during an episode of the Lex Fridman podcast. The implant is reportedly functioning well, with about 400 out of 1,024 electrodes providing signals. Neuralink's BCI aims to help patients, such as those with spinal cord injuries, control electronic devices using only their thoughts. The first patient, Noland Arbaugh, who was paralyzed in a diving accident, has already demonstrated significant improvements in controlling computer interfaces . Musk envisions future applications of Neuralink's technology to include providing "superhuman abilities" such as thermal and eagle vision, restoring blindness, curing diseases, and enhancing neurological functions. He also mentioned the potential for humans to communicate faster than traditional methods by merging with AI systems through Neuralink. However, these advanced capabilities are still speculative and require further scientific validation.
