Marathon Digital Engages Kenyan Government: Crypto Policy and Energy Use Talks at American Business Summit
May 6, 2024
Marathon Digital, a leading crypto miner, is engaged in discussions with the Kenyan government regarding the country's cryptocurrency policy and the energy requirements for crypto mining. The talks were announced by Kenyan President William Ruto during the American Chamber of Commerce Kenya Business Summit, attended by United States Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. Marathon's involvement reflects the potential for expanded trade and investment opportunities between the U.S. and East Africa. Kenya has been progressively regulating its crypto market since November 2022, following critical observations by the International Monetary Fund on lax crypto regulation in Africa. The government is currently considering a bill to tax and regulate crypto, seeking input from stakeholders such as the Blockchain Association of Kenya. However, Kenya's stance on cryptocurrency has not always been favourable, as evidenced by its suspension of Worldcoin activities in August due to security concerns, despite urging from the U.S. to reconsider.
