Concerns Over Alleged iMessage Zero-Day Exploit: Crypto Wallet Maker's Warning Sparks Debate
Apr 17, 2024
A crypto wallet maker recently raised concerns about a potential iMessage "zero-day" exploit, suggesting that hackers might be targeting iPhone users. Trust Wallet, owned by Binance, warned users via Twitter about a purported high-risk exploit circulating on the Dark Web, claiming it could infiltrate iPhones without any user interaction. However, upon investigation, the origin of this claim was traced to an advertisement on a dark web site called CodeBreach Lab, where an individual was allegedly offering the exploit for $2 million in bitcoin. Despite the alarm raised by Trust Wallet, there is no concrete evidence to support the existence of such an exploit. Apple has not provided any comment on the matter. Zero-day exploits, particularly those involving remote code execution (RCE) and zero-click capabilities, are indeed highly valuable to hackers due to their ability to take control of devices without user interaction. However, their rarity and complexity make them difficult to find and develop, with some firms reportedly offering millions of dollars for such exploits.
