Brothers Behind $25M Crypto Heist to Face Trial in October 2025 for MEV Bot Exploit
Aug 19, 2024
A federal judge has scheduled the trial for Anton and James Peraire-Bueno, two brothers accused of orchestrating a $25 million cryptocurrency theft, for October 14, 2025. The brothers allegedly exploited maximal extractable value (MEV) bots by executing a rapid scheme that allowed them to steal the funds within approximately 12 seconds. According to the indictment, the brothers manipulated the Ethereum blockchain to intercept pending transactions and reroute them for their own gain. Following their arrests in May 2024, they were released on $250,000 bonds each, pending the trial. If convicted, they face up to 20 years in prison for each of the counts against them, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
