TikTok announces plans to automatically label AI-generated content (AIGC) on its platform, partnering with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) to implement its Content Credentials technology. While TikTok has previously required content creators to label realistic AIGC, it now aims to implement auto-labeling for AIGC created using other platforms. The Content Credentials technology attaches metadata to content, enabling TikTok to instantly recognize and label AIGC. Initially, this feature will be available for images and videos, with plans to extend it to audio content in the future. TikTok also joins the Content Authenticity Initiative led by Adobe, emphasizing the importance of providing ways for the public to discern authentic content amidst the rise of AI-generated deepfakes. Additionally, TikTok plans to roll out media literacy resources developed in collaboration with MediaWise and Witness, intending to release videos throughout the year to highlight media literacy skills and explain how features like AIGC labels can help contextualize content. This initiative comes amid growing concerns over the potential misuse of AI-generated content, exemplified by recent instances such as a fraudulent cryptocurrency exchange in Hong Kong using AI-generated videos and images of Elon Musk, and Warren Buffett's warning about the impact of AI on illicit financial activities.
