Tether's CEO has issued a warning to cryptocurrency users regarding a potential new wave of crypto-airdrop scam emails, urging extreme caution when handling such emails received within the past 24 hours. The warning comes after reports of a prominent email list management provider, widely utilized by crypto firms, being compromised in a data breach. While the CEO, Paolo Ardoino, did not disclose the name of the breached company, he assured that more details would be provided after the completion of the investigation. To safeguard against phishing attempts, users are advised to verify the authenticity of emails and ensure two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled on crypto platforms. Additionally, CoinGecko co-founder Bobby Ong confirmed minutes later that the attack had impacted a crypto email newsletter vendor used by multiple companies, including CoinGecko itself, prompting warnings against clicking on links related to fraudulent CoinGecko tokens or emails promising new token launches. This development underscores the ongoing concern surrounding crypto scams and hacks within the industry, with over $574 million in digital assets lost across 30 individual crypto hacks reported in May 2024, representing a significant increase from the previous month.
