Sony Warns AI Developers and Music Streaming Companies Against Misuse of Copyrighted Content

Sony has issued warnings to over 700 companies, including AI developers like OpenAI and Microsoft, as well as music streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, prohibiting them from using its copyrighted material for training, development, or commercialization of any artificial intelligence systems. The letter sent by Sony emphasises that unauthorised use of its content for AI purposes deprives the company of control and appropriate compensation, urging companies to adopt best practices to protect artists and songwriters. Sony's concerns stem from the belief that unauthorised use of its content may have already occurred in relation to the training or development of AI systems. The company has given developers a deadline to provide details of all content used in their models and has warned against automated analytical techniques aimed at analysing text and data without consent. This move by Sony reflects broader concerns in the music industry about the potential misuse of copyrighted content in AI technologies, prompting proactive measures to safeguard intellectual property rights.
