OpenAI has developed Voice Engine, a text-to-speech AI model capable of creating synthetic voices based on short audio segments, allowing users to input text and receive AI-generated voice results. However, despite showcasing its potential through provided audio samples, OpenAI has opted against a wide release due to concerns about potential misuse and ethical implications. The company initially planned a pilot program for developers but has since scaled back its ambitions, emphasising its commitment to AI safety and societal resilience. While Voice Engine offers various benefits such as reading assistance and global content translation, OpenAI acknowledges the risks associated with voice cloning technology, including potential fraudulent activities like phone scams and security breaches. As a result, the company is currently limiting its use to select partner companies and has implemented strict terms of use, requiring informed consent from voice donors and clear disclosure of AI-generated voices. OpenAI aims to foster a dialogue on responsible deployment and suggests societal adjustments, including phasing out voice-based authentication and educating the public on deceptive AI content.
