In a recent court ruling, artists Ryder Ripps and Jeremy Cahen had their counterclaims against Yuga Labs, the creator of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection, rejected. The court ordered Ripps and Cahen to pay nearly $9 million in compensation, which includes legal fees, expert witness fees, and disgorgement. This decision comes after Yuga Labs initially won a lawsuit against Ripps and Cahen in April 2023 for copyright infringement, relating to their unauthorised creation of the Ryder Ripps BAYC (RR/BAYC) collection, which played on the BAYC brand. The earlier judgement had already required Ripps and Cahen to pay $1.57 million in damages to Yuga Labs, and this recent ruling further solidifies their financial obligations in the legal dispute.
